Anna DeLaski: Solminer

Chumash, Ineseno land - Los Olivos, California

www.solminer.com, @solminerwine

I am a first-generation immigrant to California. Born and raised near the Wachau Region in Austria, I lived in Norway and Canada during and after my college years. After 10 years of cold Canadian winters, I found myself drawn to sunny California and moved here in 2009. Shortly after my move to California, I met David. We fell in love, married and in 2012 we gave birth to two children: Linus, our son, and Solminer, our wine business. I haven’t been bored since.

We also were able to purchase a beautiful piece of land with a 3-acre vineyard in Los Olivos that year. I am acknowledging the Chumash Peoples who have lived on this land much longer than us, their Elders, both past and present, as well as future generations.

At our 12-acre certified organic and biodynamic vineyard, we grow Grüner Veltliner, Blaufränkisch, Riesling, St. Laurent and Syrah. On our “terroir” we foster diversity and balance. The vineyard, apple and olive orchards are surrounded by cover crops, oak and pepper trees, and native and pollinator friendly flowers and shrubs in hedgerows. Chickens, donkeys and sheep grazing on the land or hanging out around the barn are an important component of our vineyard's fertility/composting program.

We produce less than 2000 cases a year, and in the cellar our wine making is with minimal intervention: native yeasts, stainless steel tanks and neutral barrels and no additions other than minimal sulfur before bottling.
